raiLA COMPETITION 2010
Los Angeles, California

railLA staged an open ideas competition for the neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles and south of Union Rail Station. This proposal envisions a walking-cycling-rail dependent community built to "Cover" the existing channelized LA River basin and train lines around a large Central Park. The existing, historic, elevated bridges and light rail line physically "Connect" Boyle Heights and downtown Los Angeles. These diverse cultures and socio-economic groups "Converge" in this new community. The proposal for reclaiming valuable downtown real estate capitalizes on using rail development to leverage social and economic opportunities.

railLA seeks to build private sector and grassroots support to implement a statewide high-speed rail infrastructure with Los Angeles' Union Station as the hub. The completion of this system will lead to the revitalization of communities throughout California and will establish the state as a national example showcasing the benefits of the transition from the automobile to efficient and sustainable mass transit.
