THE HIGHLINE COMPETITION 2004
Friends of the Highline
New York, New York
WDW received a Jury Selection award for our entry "The Appalachian Trail Abridged Version". Friends of the Highline staged an open, one-stage ideas competition challenging entrants to create compelling visions for a new, urban, public space on the Highline, 1.5 miles of existing New York City infrastructure.
The basis of the design is a botanical transect of the Appalachian Trail transplanted and abridged to fit the 1.5 mile elevated rail corridor. Regional and micro-climate plant groupings are showcased in 0.2 mile sections along the abandoned rail line. Site furniture and paving are constructed using materials from the 7 regional plant locations. The diversity of New York City is symbolically reflected in the regional and botanical diversity of the Appalachian Trail.
