L'Auberge del Mar is a 120-room boutique resort located in the seaside community of Del Mar, twenty minutes north of San Diego . The hotel was a favorite getaway for Hollywood film stars from the 1920's through the 1940's as Del Mar has long been known for the Del Mar Racetrack and fairgrounds. In January 2008 Destination Hotels and Resorts undertook a $25 million renovation transforming the property into a 5-star hotel modeled as a seaside estate.
WHITIN DESIGN WORKS assisted in the rebranding of the resort and reprogrammed and redesigned the outdoor areas to achieve residential scaled spaces with a strong connection to the Pacific Ocean and between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design utilizes a green and white color palette in the both the building color and plant palette.
The outdoor lobby terrace and the pool area provide multiple levels oriented toward the spectacular Pacific Ocean view. The pool area includes a wedding terrace, poolside cabanas, a bar terrace, fire place and water wall. The fast track construction schedule required diligent coordination and numerous field visits to insure design integrity.
Two additional phases of the resort renovation, the restaurant with an outdoor dining terrace and a free-standing spa building with three outdoor courtyards were completed in March 2009.
In early 2010 WHITIN DESIGN WORKS filmed a promotional video as a submission to the 2010 ASLA Design Competition. Click here to view the video.
